A Case Study On The Use Of English In A Non-English Speaking Country

Make a comprehensive investigation on the use of English in a non-English-speaking country. This study should also describe the problems faced by this country in the modern world of globalization.

Introduction

The wide spread of English has given rise to many new varieties of English; and almost every country has got some special grammatical or lexical expansion while using the English language.  The dominance of the English language has caused a concern to imperialism. Cooke (1988) has used the metaphor 'Trojan horse' to convey that a country may initially welcome English language, but its fast growth and spread would cause a danger to the local language and culture. In fact, there are many researchers who are not in support of the blind spread of English, and they emphasize that local and ELT teachers should watch out their steps and teach their students not to learn English at the cost of their local language and culture. One of the ways that has been devised to appropriate this is the emergence of world Englishes. It has got a new style for teaching and acquisition of English in different countries. For example, Australia has got Aboriginal English varieties or Australian English. World Englishes are actually being the varieties of Englishes accepted globally in their respective cultural contexts. Literature Review

In today's world, English is not just a globalized language, but an inevitable part of everyone's life. If someone knows a few languages, but is unaware of English, life might be difficult for him or her; however, if he or she knows only English, it would be easy to survive anywhere in the world. A very simple and first-hand example in this connection is my visit to Germany. Although Germany is considered as a monolingual country, the spread of English has not left its mark here. Most of them, especially the youngsters, were able to guide and help me in understandable English. There are many reasons behind the widespread of English; and in this section I would briefly discuss some of the important factors through the researches done in this area. In this paper I aim to show the use of English as an international language as well as the localization of the English language by respective nations. I would be particular about presenting the variety of Indian English. The expansion of grammar and lexis would be investigated in particular. Findings

It is highly interesting to see the results that I have been able to analyze of the Indian English variety. But before going to the details of the analysis done for the above-mentioned sample, I would like to present one detailed chat here for it has got very interesting innovations and expansions of English dialect. This chat is taken from the conversation between a boy and a girl where both of them are Latin dancers. The boy is very beautiful Bachata dancer and the girl dances Salsa as well as Bachata. The girl is known as a 'chick' in the circle. She has lived in Germany for many years, and her dressing styles have got immensely German even though she is presently in India. Conclusion

In this section I would like to conclude my paper with the important findings. Although it is investigated that Indian English has got many new grammatical and vocabulary expansion, it would be worthwhile to see that the influence of the dominant dialect is present throughout. In fact, the speakers like to keep themselves in touch with the current trends of American vocabulary, slang and phrases. It's only when they get very informal, their vocabulary gets personalized with the Indianness. It is seen in the chat of the dancer friends when the guy said; 'you have an awesome presence, toh the place gets rocking, So bound to happen., Not surprised at all, Sundays class will attend'. In these sentences we observe that the speaker has used only minimal structure just to convey his feelings and many times it's shared by the expressions as 'Awww' and 'arre'. In the analysis, I have presented the discussions from three selective participants, but the majority of the participants responded in the same way. The lexis that are included from their native language is mainly the expression words and the words which is very exciting for them in their native language as 'patakha' which actually means the noisy bombs and rockets used in the festivals…
