Assignment Criteria

'First tutorial paper: A detailed bibliography and a detailed structure for an essay  with a brief explanatory outline about one course topic (min. 1000 words total). (Topic  lottery)'

  1. Bibliography

You  could  start with  the  recommended  reading list  on Wattle,  checking  the  bibliographies  for  books  or articles  relevant  to  your  tutorial  paper  topic. Online  searches are another  possibility  but be aware that keyword searches will only help you to a certain extent since they may be too  broad for your specific topic. So the next step would be to go through the bibliographies of the  works you found on the topic in order to retrieve more specific references.

  1. First survey

Take a closer look at  the most promising materials  you  found with  the question in mind what  aspects might  be most  relevant  for  the presentation  of  your  topic.  In  case  of entire  books  you  could look  for  reviews  that will ease  your attempt  to  find  out how  relevant  the  volume might  possibly  be  for  your  presentation.  These  reviews  should  of  course also  find  entry  into  your  bibliography. On  the basis of your readings  try  to  formulate one or several questions  that may  serve as a guideline for your occupation with the topic. See, how well chosen your questions are  when  taking  a  look  at  your  further  findings.  Probably  your  questions  make  further  bibliographical searches for even more specific materials necessary or have to be re-formulated  due to being premature. Repeating the process is a normal part of a bibliographer's work.

  1. Detailed structure

Design  a  structure  for  your  future  tutorial  paper.  A  standard  sequence  would  consist  of  an  introduction with questions and hypothesis, a main part addressing various aspects of the topic  in a conclusive sequence, and a conclusion. Each aspect should have a header followed by a brief  outline of its main points. Of course, other formats are possible. Once you finish your structure  think it through again.

  1. Explanatory outline

Writing a brief outline based on the structure will help you to see how thoroughly you actually  thought through your structure since the outline should present the arguments your are going to  make  in  a  meaningful  sequence  that  supports  the  claims  you  make  on  the  basis  of  your  materials.

  1. Style sheet

Don't forget to adhere to a style sheet regarding your bibliography and your text. Choose a style  sheet  that  suits  your  requirements  best.  The  style  sheet  will  help  you  to  use  a  standardized  format for your bibliographical entries, your text (headers, paragraphs, citations) as well as the  links between your bibliography and text.

At  the  end  do  not  forget  to  erase  those  entries  from  your  bibliography  that  you  found  have  nothing to do with your topic.

  1. Hand in

The file name of your 1st tutorial paper file should be written as follows:

SURNAME_NAME_uNumber_Tute1_210414.doc(x)

The file should be in office doc, docx format and your email should be send in time to michael.schimmelpfennig@anu.edu.au

Background

Traditional Chinese Medicine refers to the practice of medicine which developed in China some thousands of years ago. It encompasses specific and integrated system of theoretical approach, which comes from the history of ancient Chinese medicine. The discipline developed through experiential knowledge and observation of Chinese people on human physiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment outcomes (Bian et al., 2012)(Jia et al.,2004).

The field was popular not only in treating diseases but through theoretical approaches laid down the stone for prevention of diseases too. Traditional Chinese Medicine has a great contribution to promote the health and prosperity of Chinese people and also it aided in the further development of medical sciences all across the world. This branch of medicine was very popular amongst 'bare-footed' doctors in China who rendered medical care to the rural population in China (Bian et al., 2012)(Jia et al.,2004).

Theoretical Framework

Traditional Chinese Medicine consists of specific theories that guided the practice of medicine. Such theories are commonly known as theories of yin and yang, five element theory, zang-fu organ theory, meridians, and pathogenesis, syndrome, and diagnostic techniques. The theoretical approach relied upon differential diagnosis and selective treatment of diseases. The approach also included principles of health preservation through the application of knowledge of six natural factors (Bian et al., 2012)(Jia et al.,2004).

Features of TCM Approach & its Appraisal

The approach relied on the interpretation of diagnostic endpoints and therapeutic principles based on the judgment of a practitioner's knowledge of the physiological functions and the associated pathogenesis in the human body. TCM approach considered the human body as a holistic unit that is interconnected by zang-fu organs and a system of channels and collaterals, which maintains a link with the external environment. Thus TCM focussed that for the development of disease there was a link between the endogenous factors (within the body) and exogenous factors (found outside the body) (Bian et al., 2012)(Jia et al.,2004).

This approach is absolutely rational from the concept of modern medicine too. Since, a disturbance in homeostasis leads to the development of a disease, hence understanding the exogenous factors that changed the internal milieu formed the basis of TCM(Bian et al., 2012)(Jia et al.,2004). Even, viewing the body as a whole is quite pertinent in the light of modern medicine. Presently there has been a stress in understanding molecular knowledge of diseases at the cellular level, but it is equally realized that what impact that has on the systemic aspect (whole aspect) is even more important.
