The aim of this essay is to discuss the importance of understanding Social Exclusion in the field of Social Work. This is true because a social worker fulfills his/her duty towards the larger society that is fundamentally divided in many aspects. As a social worker, it is extremely important to gain an understanding of different parameters and divisions in the society. Social workers cannot fulfill their responsibilities unless they grasp all the key elements of society and work objectively as suggested by the scholars of Social Science.
Social Exclusion is one such aspect that divides the society into two halves – socially included and socially excluded population groups. As a social worker, understanding of this concept is integral to the nature of this subject matter. Because only when a relevant understanding of socially excluded groups takes place, the social worker is able to provide them with justice and serve them better. Hence, social workers need to elaborate their perspective of the society and try to achieve an awareness to do full justice with their role as social workers. This paper demonstrates the concept of social exclusion and how a social worker can achieve a better understanding of working with the socially excluded population (Jordan, K. and Hunter, B., 2010).
The role of Social Workers is crucial to help in improving mental health services and the outcomes of mental health for citizens of the country. This task takes place by including social and rights-based attitude towards work and using a specialized relationship based skills by focussing on recovery and personalization. Such strategies help the socially excluded groups to make positive, healthy and self- directed change in society (Levitas, R., 2009).
As a student of Social Work, my understanding of the society has changed tremendously. Studies in this course and lectures by the professor have helped me to develop a broader perspective of society and treat everybody equally. Rights and wrongs, sacred and profane, black and white, have all been a man- made phenomena and studies in social work have helped me to critically analyze such concepts of society. Recently, I was provided with an opportunity to meet and interact with mentally challenged children in an NGO. I was very excited about this opportunity as it was something I had not done previously. In this activity, my task was to help children with their studies, talk to them and play with them. This interaction affected my attitude to some extent and provided me with practical implications of Social Work. As a social worker, it is very important that individuals should not have pre- conceived notions and avoid stereotypical perceptions of different population groups. I went with a similar bent of mind and wanted to do full justice with my understanding of the society (Allen, R., 2014).
When I met those children I came to know that they were divided according to their intellect and degree of mental challenges. The NGO served those children by educating them and took full-time responsibility. The first room that I had entered consisted of mentally challenged children who were able to understand simple and minor things. They were mostly in the second to fourth standard and were peacefully interacting with us. These kids ranged from the age groups of 5 to 12 years. The second room had extreme cases wherein children also had physical disabilities of hands and mouth. They were very violent and interaction with them was almost impossible. These children were mostly of 9 to 15 years of age and they were tied to their seats. It was a disheartening view. The third room was a blessing in disguise as; children there were studying in higher classes. It was unbelievable to see mentally challenged children working on advanced mathematical problems, solving chemistry equations and working on almost every subject that a normal child would do. With years of training and helping hand from the NGO, these lucky children were able to get the right help and turn their fate into a brighter future (Allen, R., 2014).
