Length:1000 words (excluding title page and references list)

Brief Description: This assessment requires you to draw together the work you have done in analysing your professional strengths and preferences.   You will reflect on your intrapersonal effectiveness and identify areas for professional development.

Task: The purpose of the assessment is to develop knowledge of some of the key concepts addressed in this unit and to demonstrate reflective practice, intercultural sensitivity, social awareness and writing skills. The practical focus for the portfolio has been devised to develop the attributes identified as most important by Australian Business Leaders (according to the Australian Institute of Management, 2008). These include Continuous Professional Development (the ability to reflect and learn from experience) and Communication Skills.

Part I of the portfolio focuses on your intrapersonal effectiveness and identifies areas for professional development. We expect your reflections to be informed by the reading you have done from the material on the CMD, text book and journal articles.

Here is a guide to how you should allocate the word limit for each part:

  • Introduction: 100 words
  • Body: 800 words
  • Conclusion: 100 words

The content of the portfolio should be based on the activities conducted in lectures and tutorials. You should reflect on what you have learnt about yourselfin this unit; how you learn bestand the implications of this for your effectiveness in an organisational setting. You should explore your strengths, the areas you would like to improve, and actions you need to take to allow for areas that are not your natural strengths. You also need to set some goals based on the goal setting approaches covered in the unit.

INTRODUCTION

Prior to these sessions on interpersonal effectiveness, I often believed like many others that for effective and impressive performance in any job, technical skills are the most important. However, I learnt that it is a myth and I found that our intrapersonal skills are at least equally important and at times can be of even greater importance. This report emphasizes on gaining control of and channelizing our emotions. Failure to do so can be derogatory to a person both from professional as well as personal perspective (Lussier, 2010). For these reasons I reflect on this report my learning on intrapersonal effectiveness in general an emotional intelligence in particular.

INTRAPERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS

Intra-Personal, as the name suggests, focuses on the characteristics and traits of a person related to the self. It is one person's perception by which he/she observes and decides about the world around him or herself. Intrapersonal traits include personality, attitude, integrity, emotional intelligence. As professionals move up in the ladder, importance of intrapersonal effectiveness keeps on increasing. In professional life we always tend to face several adverse situations which not only tests our brain, but also the strength of our minds. I found that people with intrapersonal intelligence always tend to make better managers than those who don't because of two important reasons:

  • Better Understanding of their own: These people have better awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses which helps in assessing how much to prepare under which circumstances.
  • Better understanding of surroundings and people: These people could also easily and quickly grasp the nature of the surroundings and the people with whom they deal. Thus, they adapt quicker and respond better to new situations.

Also from the learning in our sessions as well as with a little focus on our day to day experiences, we can confidently accept that intrapersonal effectiveness is instrumental in the success of our lives. Also, I found emotional intelligence as a critical part of our intrapersonal effectiveness and thus I have tried to present my learning and experience on EI.
